Denmark has resumed accepting working holiday visa applications from citizens of most partner countries including Australia and New Zealand.

Denmark had temporarily suspended all Working Holiday agreements in March 2020 due to COVID-19.

On 30 October 2021, Denmark has reinstated its Working Holiday scheme for citizens of Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea for the first time in 19 months. Citizens of these countries who meet the requirements for a Danish working holiday visa can now once again apply to live and work in Denmark on a working holiday for up to 12 months.

The announcement was posted on the New to Denmark website on 5 November 2021.

While there have been no major changes to Denmark’s working holiday visa rules for most countries, a yearly quota of 150 working holiday visa applicants from Chile to Denmark has now come into effect.

Unfortunately, Denmark’s Working Holiday scheme for Argentinian citizens remains suspended. The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) says this is because “Argentina has not yet accepted Denmark’s proposal for a revision of the Working Holiday Agreement between Denmark and Argentina”.

Australians aged 18-30 with at least DKK18,000 (approx. AUD3,800) in savings and a return plane ticket to Denmark can easily apply online for a Danish working holiday visa. See our guide to Denmark’s working holiday visa for Australian citizens for more information.

Many other countries are also now accepting working holiday visa applications from Australian citizens, but there are some exceptions. For example, Ireland and Japan both still have a pause on new working holiday visa applications due to COVID-19. There are also numerous countries that offer working holiday visas to Australians which remain closed for non-essential travel at this time.

Australia removed its ban on outbound travel for Australian citizens and permanent residents on 1 November 2021. Australia’s international border unfortunately remains closed to inbound tourists for now, but will hopefully reopen in 2022.
